Construction

Conductor:

  • Annealed uncoated copper conductor, PVC insulation, nylon jacket, surface printed.

Applications:

  • General purpose wiring in accordance with the NEC, maximum conductor temperature of 90°C in dry locations and 75°C in wet locations, 600 volts, for installation in conduit or other recognized raceway.
  • Also used for wiring of machine tools (stranded), appliances, and control circuits not exceeding 600 volts.

Industry Approvals:

  • Listed by UL as type THHN or THWN per Standard 83, and as Type MTW per Standard 1063 (stranded items).
  • Listed by UL as Gasoline and Oil Resistant II.
  • Listed by UL as sunlight resistant (1/0 AWG and larger, black only).
  • 1/0 AWG and larger pass UL and IEEE-383 ribbon burner flame test and are listed for CT use.
  • Listed by UL as 105°C appliance wiring material, 80°C where exposed to oil.
  • Conforms to Federal Specification J-C-30B.

Note:
As THHN:90°C conductor temperature and 30°C ambient in dry locations.
As THWN:75°C conductor temperature and 30°C ambient in wet or dry locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

THHN wire is well suited for conduit because the nylon jacket helps the wire pull more smoothly through raceways while adding protection over the PVC insulation. This makes it a common choice for organized building wiring runs where individual conductors are installed inside conduit.

The nylon jacket provides an added protective layer over the PVC insulation. It helps improve resistance to abrasion during pulling and can also support performance in certain oil, fuel, or chemical exposure conditions when the wire is properly rated for the application.

Yes. Stranded THHN wire is often easier to bend, route, and terminate in applications where flexibility matters, especially in panels, machinery, appliances, and control circuits. Solid THHN may be preferred for simpler, more stationary wiring runs.

THWN indicates the wire has a wet-location rating. Many building wires are dual-rated as THHN/THWN, which means the same wire may be suitable for dry-location THHN applications and wet-location THWN applications when installed according to code and project requirements.

THHN building wire is a strong fit when the project calls for 600V general-purpose wiring in conduit or an approved raceway and the installation conditions match the wire’s temperature and location ratings. Other building wire types may be better suited for direct burial, higher moisture exposure, or different insulation requirements.
