Frequently Asked Questions

RG62/U coaxial cable is designed with a nominal impedance of 93 ohms, making it suitable for systems engineered around higher-impedance signal transmission.

The impedance of a coaxial cable affects how electrical signals travel through the cable and how well the cable matches connected equipment. Using cable with the impedance specified by the system helps reduce signal reflections and maintain reliable transmission. RG62/U should therefore be selected when the equipment or network specifically calls for approximately 93-ohm coaxial cable rather than more common 50-ohm or 75-ohm designs.

An NEC Type CL2 designation identifies the cable for use in Class 2 power-limited circuits when installed in accordance with applicable electrical code requirements.

CL2-rated cable may be used for certain communications, signaling, control, and low-voltage applications where that classification is required. The rating should always be considered together with the equipment specifications, installation location, local electrical codes, and any additional listing requirements for the project.

Semi-solid polyethylene insulation helps maintain the spacing and electrical relationship between the center conductor and shield, which are important to the cable's impedance and signal characteristics.

The RG62/U constructions offered on this page use semi-solid polyethylene insulation and have a nominal velocity of propagation of 84%. This means signals travel through the cable at approximately 84% of the speed of light in a vacuum. Maintaining consistent insulation geometry helps the cable provide predictable electrical performance over its installed length.

A 95% bare copper braid provides substantial shielding around the insulated center conductor, helping protect transmitted signals from electromagnetic interference while also providing a conductive return path.

Shield coverage is particularly important in coaxial applications because outside electrical noise can affect signal integrity. The braided construction also provides flexibility compared with some solid shielding methods, making it useful where dependable shielding and practical cable handling are both important.

Before replacing RG62/U cable, verify the required impedance, conductor construction, shielding, outside diameter, installation rating, connectors, and electrical characteristics of the original system.

RG62/U should not be selected solely because another cable has a similar physical size. The products shown here have a nominal impedance of 93 ohms, 13.5 pF/ft capacitance, 84% velocity of propagation, a 22 AWG solid Bare Copperweld conductor, and 95% bare copper braid shielding. Matching the electrical requirements of the equipment is especially important when replacing cable in an existing communications or RF system.
