Applications:
Dual-shield RG-6 typically uses two shielding layers, while quad-shield RG-6 uses four layers to provide greater protection against electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference.
Quad shielding can be beneficial in electrically noisy environments or installations where multiple signal sources could interfere with transmission. Dual-shield cable may be sufficient for less demanding applications. The best choice depends on the installation environment, required shielding effectiveness, connectors, and system specifications.
Direct-burial RG-6/U is designed for underground installations where the cable may be exposed to moisture and soil conditions without being installed entirely inside a protective raceway.
The direct-burial RG-6/U construction offered here uses a polyethylene jacket and is intended for CATV and related signal applications. Standard indoor RG-6 should not automatically be substituted for cable specifically designed and rated for underground installation.
CM, CL2, and CL3 are NEC cable classifications that indicate suitability for particular communications or power-limited circuit installations.
CM identifies general-purpose communications cable, while CL2 and CL3 apply to Class 2 and Class 3 power-limited circuits. Because the allowable installation depends on the application and location, the cable rating should be matched to project specifications and applicable electrical code requirements rather than selected solely by the RG-6 designation.
Foam polyethylene helps provide the dielectric properties needed to maintain consistent signal transmission while supporting relatively high velocity of propagation.
The RG-6 and RG-6/U constructions on this page use foam polyethylene insulation, with most providing a nominal velocity of propagation of 81%. This construction helps support efficient RF signal transmission for applications such as CATV, MATV, broadcast, network, and drop-cable installations.
RG-6 can support CATV, CCTV, broadcast, and other RF applications, but the correct construction depends on the requirements of the individual system.
Factors such as shielding, jacket material, NEC rating, installation environment, velocity of propagation, and connector compatibility can differ from one application to another. For example, the RG-6 options available here include dual-shield CATV, quad-shield CATV, CL2-rated CCTV, and direct-burial CATV constructions. Selecting the version that matches the actual installation requirements is more important than simply specifying RG-6.
