Shielded, Non-Plenum NEC Type FPLR - PVC
Shielded fire alarm cable is typically chosen when the circuit may be exposed to electrical interference that could disrupt reliable signal transmission.
The shield helps reduce electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference from nearby equipment, motors, power wiring, and other electrical sources. Whether shielding is required depends on the fire alarm equipment manufacturer's specifications, system design, installation environment, and applicable codes.
FPLR identifies power-limited fire alarm cable that is rated for riser applications.
The "R" designation indicates that the cable is intended for vertical runs in risers and shafts where a riser-rated cable is permitted. FPLR cable is evaluated for flame propagation requirements associated with these installations and is commonly used for fire protective signaling circuits under NEC Article 760. It is not the same as plenum-rated FPLP cable.
The correct wire gauge depends on circuit length, current requirements, allowable voltage drop, connected devices, and the fire alarm system manufacturer's specifications.
Larger conductors have lower electrical resistance and may be appropriate for longer runs or circuits carrying greater current. The shielded fire alarm cables available here include 12, 14, 16, and 18 AWG sizes, allowing the cable to be matched more closely to the electrical requirements of the system.
Four-conductor fire alarm cable is used when an installation requires additional conductors within a single cable for the specified circuit or equipment configuration.
A two-conductor cable may be sufficient for simpler circuits, while four conductors can accommodate applications requiring additional signaling, power, control, or circuit functions. The number of conductors should always follow the wiring requirements of the fire alarm panel, device, and system design rather than being selected solely for installation convenience.
FPLR cable should not be assumed to be acceptable for installation in a plenum space. FPLR is a riser rating, while FPLP identifies fire alarm cable specifically rated for plenum applications.
Before installation, verify how the building space is classified and which cable rating is required by the project specifications and applicable electrical code. If the cable will pass through an environmental air-handling space, a properly rated plenum fire alarm cable may be required.
