A CPE jacket provides a durable outer layer for cable used in demanding industrial environments.
Chlorinated polyethylene, or CPE, is commonly used as a cable jacket where durability and resistance to challenging environmental conditions are important. When paired with XHHW-2 insulated conductors, it creates a robust tray cable construction for industrial control and power applications where the cable may encounter harsher conditions than those found in ordinary indoor installations.
Unshielded cable is generally appropriate when electromagnetic interference is not a significant concern for the circuit.
Shielding is commonly used when sensitive signals must be protected from electrical noise generated by motors, variable-frequency drives, switching equipment or nearby power conductors. For control or power circuits where that additional EMI protection is unnecessary, an unshielded construction can provide a simpler cable solution. The electrical environment and equipment manufacturer's requirements should be reviewed before choosing between shielded and unshielded cable.
XHHW-2 identifies the insulation type and indicates suitability for both wet and dry locations at specified temperature ratings.
XHHW-2 is a thermoset-insulated conductor designation used in many industrial power and control cables. The "-2" designation distinguishes conductors rated for use in wet as well as dry environments at their applicable temperature rating. In this cable construction, the XHHW-2 insulated conductors are contained within the overall CPE jacket.
Yes. The correct conductor count depends on the number of circuits, control functions and equipment connections required by the system.
A simple control circuit may require only a few conductors, while equipment with numerous sensors, relays or control functions can require considerably more. Choosing the appropriate conductor count can simplify installation by carrying multiple required conductors within a single overall cable. The product specifications should also be checked for conductor size, overall diameter and other installation requirements.
Start with the required conductor size, number of conductors, voltage requirements and approximate cable quantity.
It is also helpful to provide information about the installation environment, intended application and any project-specific requirements. If the cable will be installed where shielding, particular listings, environmental resistance or other performance characteristics are required, include those details so the appropriate cable construction can be identified.
