Construction

Conductors:

  • Stranded soft bare copper.

Insulation:

  • Concentric layer of 90°C cross linked polyethylene (XLP). This XLP compound is specially formulated to provide excellent electrical and physical properties. Each insulated conductor passes the UL VW-1 vertical flame test.

Color Code:

  • The individual conductors are color coded in accordance with ICEA Table K-2.

Cabling:

  • The specified number of conductors are cabled with fillers where needed and a suitable tape is applied over the assembly. Two-conductor cables are flat parallel design.

Overall Jacket:

  • A heavy-duty polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheath to meet the requirements of UL Class-12 is applied over the assembled core.

Application:

  • Control applications where cable is used in conduit, ducts, trays or racks. It can also be used in free air when supported by a messenger or for direct burial. Can be installed in cable trays per NEC Articles 318, 340 and 501.

Features:

  • Moisture and sunlight resistant.
  • Meets UL 1277 flame tray test with 70,000 BTU flame source.
  • Rated 90°C Dry, 75°C Wet, 600 volt.
  • UL Listed as type TC and for aerial use and direct burial.
  • Insulated conductors are XHHW-2 type and pass VW-1 flame test
  • Meets appropriate sections of NEC Articles 318, 340 and 501.

Meets NEC:

  • Article 318 for Cable Tray Installations.
  • Article 340 for Cable Construction.
  • Article 501 for Class 1, Div. 2 Hazardous Locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

XHHW-2 insulation combines strong electrical properties with resistance to heat and moisture.

Each conductor uses a concentric layer of crosslinked polyethylene designed for demanding electrical environments. The thermoset insulation maintains its physical and electrical characteristics under elevated temperatures and provides the moisture resistance associated with XHHW-2 construction, making it well suited to industrial control cable applications.

This category includes a wide range of multi-conductor configurations for different control-circuit requirements.

Available products include two-conductor designs as well as cables with substantially higher conductor counts. This allows a single cable construction to support applications ranging from simple control circuits to equipment requiring numerous conductors within one overall jacket. The appropriate conductor count depends on the number of circuits or control points that need to be carried.

The flat arrangement provides a practical construction for cables containing only two insulated conductors.

Rather than adding fillers simply to create a round shape, the two conductors can be positioned side by side within the overall jacket. Cables with three or more conductors are cabled together with fillers where needed to form the assembled core. This allows the cable geometry to reflect the conductor count rather than forcing every configuration into the same shape.

Each insulated conductor has passed the UL VW-1 vertical flame test.

VW-1 testing evaluates how an individual insulated wire responds when exposed to a controlled vertical flame. In this tray cable, the XHHW-2 insulated conductors each meet that flame-performance requirement, while the complete cable construction also meets the UL 1277 tray-cable flame test.

The PVC jacket protects the insulated conductor assembly from moisture, sunlight and physical wear.

The overall sheath is designed to meet UL Class-12 requirements and provides a protective layer around the cabled conductors, fillers and binder. Combined with the XHHW-2 insulation, the jacket helps create a cable construction suited to industrial installations where the cable may be exposed to challenging environmental and mechanical conditions.
