Yes. This Type K wire family includes both solid and stranded tin-plated copper conductor constructions, depending on the AWG size and catalog number.
Choosing between solid and stranded construction depends on the electrical and physical requirements of the installation. Solid conductors can be appropriate where the wire will remain relatively stationary, while stranded constructions provide greater flexibility for routing and installation. Because multiple constructions may be available within the same AWG size, the individual catalog specifications should be checked before ordering.
No. Type K and Type KK have different electrical ratings and should not be treated as interchangeable without confirming the project specification.
Type K MIL-W-16878/11 is rated for 600 volts, while Type KK MIL-W-16878/12 is a separate 1000V wire construction. Even when conductor size and material appear similar, the specified wire type, voltage rating, finished dimensions, and other construction requirements should be matched to the application rather than substituting one type solely on the basis of AWG size.
These tests help verify the integrity of the insulation under different electrical stress conditions.
Custom Cable Corp.'s Type K construction lists a 3,400V RMS spark test and a 13.5 kV peak impulse test. A spark test is used to identify insulation defects during production, while an impulse test evaluates the insulation when subjected to a brief high-voltage condition. These values are manufacturing and construction specifications and should not be confused with the wire's normal 600V operating rating.
Yes. The wire is available in standard solid colors as well as color constructions using tracers for additional conductor identification.
Tracer identification can be useful when multiple individual wires are routed together and installers need to distinguish circuits, functions, or termination points. The available colors conform to MIL-STD-104, providing a defined identification system that can help simplify assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Different conductor constructions can produce different conductor and finished wire diameters even when the wires have the same AWG size.
AWG identifies conductor size, but it does not mean every wire using that AWG number will have identical physical dimensions. A solid conductor and a stranded conductor of the same nominal gauge can have different conductor diameters and finished outside diameters after insulation is applied. Checking the published finished O.D. is important when space, routing, sleeving, connector entry, or bundle dimensions are limited.
