Frequently Asked Questions

Type KK may be specified when the circuit or equipment design requires a 1000V-rated insulated wire rather than a lower-voltage construction.

Voltage rating should be matched to the requirements of the equipment, circuit, and applicable specification. MIL-W-16878/12 Type KK provides a 1000V construction while retaining the compact size and high-temperature characteristics associated with FEP insulation. Engineers should verify the required voltage rating, conductor size, environmental conditions, and governing specification before selecting the wire.

High insulation resistance helps limit unwanted electrical leakage through the insulation between the conductor and surrounding conductive materials.

Custom Cable Corp. lists an insulation resistance of 1000 megohms per 1,000 feet for this Type KK construction. Insulation resistance is one measure of the electrical integrity of the insulating material and is especially relevant where reliable separation between conductive elements is required. It should be considered together with voltage rating, dielectric performance, temperature, and the overall system design.

Tensile strength describes the minimum pulling force the FEP insulation material can withstand before breaking under specified test conditions.

The 2000 PSI minimum tensile strength is a material-performance specification for the insulation rather than a recommended cable pulling tension. It provides information about the mechanical properties of the FEP insulation itself. Installation pulling limits should be based on the complete wire construction, conductor size, routing method, and applicable installation requirements rather than using the insulation tensile-strength value as a pulling guideline.

Elongation measures how much the insulation can stretch before breaking and helps characterize its mechanical flexibility and durability.

The Type KK construction lists a minimum elongation of 150 percent. This specification helps describe how the FEP insulation behaves when subjected to mechanical stress. Tensile strength and elongation together provide a more complete picture of insulation performance than either value alone, particularly where wires must be routed, formed, or handled during equipment assembly.

Custom Cable Corp. lists standard colors and tracers for AWG 26 through 10, while larger sizes are supplied in solid colors only.

Color and tracer options provide additional ways to identify individual wires within equipment, panels, harnesses, or assemblies. For this Type KK family, tracer identification is available through AWG 10, while larger conductors use solid-color identification. When conductor identification is important to assembly or maintenance procedures, the available color configuration should be confirmed along with AWG size and conductor construction before ordering.
