Application:
Crosslinking changes the molecular structure of polyethylene so the insulation can maintain its properties more effectively under elevated temperatures and physical stress.
Irradiated crosslinked polyethylene, often abbreviated XLPE or XLP, is treated so the polymer chains form a more interconnected structure. This can improve thermal stability and help the insulation maintain its shape and electrical properties under conditions that may be more demanding than those suited to ordinary polyethylene. The wire should still be selected according to its listed temperature, voltage, and application ratings.
Soft annealing improves conductor flexibility, while tin plating helps protect the copper surface and supports reliable termination.
Annealing makes copper more workable and easier to bend during equipment wiring and assembly. The tin coating provides a protective surface over the copper strands and can also be useful in applications where the conductor will be soldered or exposed to conditions that could accelerate oxidation of bare copper. The combination is well suited to internal wiring where both flexibility and dependable electrical performance are important.
Different UL style numbers identify specific wire constructions and should be matched to the catalog number and project requirements.
Most products in this family are listed as UL Style 3266, while certain conductor constructions are identified as UL Style 3268. A UL style number represents a defined appliance wiring material construction, including requirements such as insulation type, temperature rating, and other performance characteristics. Buyers should confirm the required UL style rather than assuming every AWG size or strand configuration carries the same designation.
Different strand counts allow designers to choose between a more rigid conductor and a more flexible construction without changing the nominal AWG size.
For example, this product family includes 22 AWG in solid, 7-strand, and 19-strand constructions. Although the electrical size remains 22 AWG, increasing the number of smaller strands generally improves flexibility and can make routing easier in confined equipment assemblies. Finished outside diameter and weight can vary slightly, so the exact catalog number should be reviewed before selection.
It means a version of the XLPE insulation can be supplied using a compound designed to meet the UL VW-1 vertical flame test.
The standard product description identifies irradiated crosslinked polyethylene insulation and notes that a VW-1 compound is available. VW-1 is a recognized flame-test classification used for certain wire and cable constructions. If flame performance is part of the equipment specification, the buyer should confirm that the exact catalog number being ordered uses the required VW-1-rated compound rather than assuming every version automatically has that classification.
