Frequently Asked Questions

An overall shield may be sufficient when the primary concern is interference affecting the cable as a whole rather than interference between individual signal circuits.

The overall shield surrounds the grouped conductors or pairs and helps reduce the influence of external electromagnetic and electrostatic noise. This construction can work well where multiple signals share a similar electrical environment and individual circuit isolation is not required. The sensitivity of the signals, surrounding equipment, cable routing, and system design should all be considered before selecting the shielding configuration.

This construction is useful when both external interference and interaction between individual signal pairs need to be controlled.

Individual pair shields help isolate sensitive circuits from one another, while the overall shield provides another layer of protection from interference originating outside the cable. This configuration may be appropriate for process instrumentation systems carrying multiple low-level signals where signal integrity is particularly important.

Pair count determines how many separate two-conductor signal circuits can be carried within one cable.

Choosing a cable with the appropriate number of pairs can consolidate multiple instrument connections into a single cable run, but it also affects overall cable diameter, weight, routing, and termination space. Engineers should match pair count to the instrument schedule while allowing for any project-specific spare-pair requirements.

Outside diameter affects cable tray fill, conduit capacity, bend space, pulling requirements, and termination planning.

Two cables with similar electrical capabilities can have substantially different overall diameters depending on pair count, shielding construction, insulation thickness, and jacket design. Checking nominal O.D. before ordering can help prevent installation problems, particularly where tray space, conduit size, cable glands, or enclosure entries are limited.

Provide the conductor size, number of conductors or pairs, required shielding configuration, cable length, and installation requirements.

It is also helpful to specify whether an overall shield or individually shielded pairs plus an overall shield are required, along with any applicable project specifications, environmental conditions, approvals, and desired reel lengths. Supplying this information helps narrow the available constructions and reduces the risk of selecting cable that does not match the instrumentation design.
