The primary difference is the voltage rating and the cable construction required to support that rating.
A 2,000V DLO cable is designed with insulation and construction appropriate for circuits requiring a higher voltage rating, while 600V or 1,000V versions may be suitable for lower-voltage equipment and power circuits. Voltage rating should not be selected simply by choosing the highest available option. The equipment voltage, electrical design, conductor size, current requirement, applicable standards, and termination hardware should all be considered when deciding which DLO construction is appropriate.
This becomes particularly important as conductor size increases. A large solid or coarsely stranded conductor can be difficult to route, bend, terminate, or reposition around equipment. The extra-flexible stranded construction used in DLO cable allows higher-current conductor sizes to be handled more easily while still providing the required copper cross-sectional area. It is especially useful where installation space, routing, vibration, or equipment movement makes cable flexibility important.
Tin coating helps protect the copper conductor from oxidation and corrosion in demanding environments.
The underlying copper provides electrical conductivity, while the tin coating adds protection where the cable may encounter moisture, industrial contaminants, or other harsh operating conditions. Tinned strands can also be advantageous during termination because the coating helps preserve the conductor surface over time. It is one reason tinned, annealed copper is commonly specified for heavy-duty flexible cable used in industrial and mobile equipment.
No. Voltage rating is only one part of determining whether a cable is suitable for an electrical system.
The conductor must also be properly sized for the load, and its temperature rating, construction, environmental resistance, installation method, required approvals, connectors, and terminations must match the application. A cable carrying a 2,000V rating should therefore not be treated as universally interchangeable with every lower-voltage power cable. The complete system requirements should be reviewed before specifying a replacement or new cable.
Not necessarily. Required approvals should be verified for the exact cable construction and part number being specified.
Mining, offshore, marine, locomotive, and industrial installations can be subject to different standards or approval requirements. Certain Custom Cable Corp. 2,000V DLO constructions identify approvals or conformance associated with MSHA, the U.S. Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping, ICEA, and other standards, but buyers should confirm which approvals apply to the specific size and construction they are purchasing rather than assuming every DLO cable carries every certification.
