Frequently Asked Questions

The drain wire provides a convenient electrical connection to the foil shield so it can be properly grounded or terminated.

On this cable, the aluminum/polyester foil shield is paired with a stranded tinned copper drain wire. Proper shield termination depends on the fire alarm equipment, system design and installation requirements.

Shielded cable is often preferred when fire alarm or signaling circuits may be exposed to electrical noise or electromagnetic interference.

Nearby power conductors, motors, transformers and other electrical equipment can introduce interference. The foil shield helps protect signal integrity when the system design or equipment manufacturer calls for additional noise protection.

Fluorocopolymer materials provide the fire, smoke and temperature performance needed for demanding plenum applications.

This cable uses color-coded fluorocopolymer insulation and a red fluorocopolymer jacket rated to 150°C. The construction also provides oil and moisture resistance along with strong electrical and mechanical properties.

Yes, this cable is designed for installation in air plenums without conduit where the applicable code and project requirements allow it.

Its FPLP construction is tested for low smoke and flame performance under UL 910. The installer should still verify local code, system requirements and the specific building application before installation.

No. Jacket color alone does not determine whether a cable is suitable for a particular fire alarm system.

The FPLP rating, NYC certification, conductor size, number of pairs, shielding, temperature rating and equipment requirements all need to be considered. The red jacket helps identify the cable, but system compatibility must be confirmed from the full specification.
