    5. Line wire conforms to ANSI C8.35

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Weather-proof line wire has a protective covering, but that covering should not automatically be treated as electrical insulation.
The polyethylene covering helps protect the copper conductor from weather and environmental exposure in overhead distribution applications. However, covered conductors and fully insulated conductors are not interchangeable terms. The installation design, voltage, clearances and applicable electrical requirements should determine whether a particular conductor is appropriate.

Hard-drawn copper is typically selected when greater mechanical strength is important.
Copper temper affects both mechanical and electrical characteristics. Hard-drawn copper offers greater tensile strength, which can be useful for overhead conductors that must support mechanical loading. Soft annealed copper is more flexible and generally offers slightly lower electrical resistance. The appropriate temper depends on the installation and performance requirements.

Yes. Stranded conductors are generally more flexible than solid conductors of comparable size.
That added flexibility can make stranded line wire easier to route, terminate or handle during installation. Solid conductors provide a simpler construction and may be appropriate where flexibility is less important. Conductor size, span, mechanical loading and termination requirements should all be considered before selecting between solid and stranded construction.

Selection should be based on electrical load, conductor resistance, installation conditions and system requirements, not size alone.
Larger conductors generally provide greater current-carrying capability and lower resistance, but the correct choice also depends on allowable voltage drop, span length, conductor temperature and the requirements of the distribution system. The product specifications should be compared carefully before selecting a conductor for a particular project.

No. The covering does not eliminate the need to follow proper clearances and installation requirements.
Weather-resistant covering provides environmental protection, but an overhead distribution system still has to be designed around appropriate conductor spacing, supports, voltage class and applicable utility or electrical standards. The presence of HMWPE covering should not be used as a reason to reduce required clearances or treat the conductor as touch-safe.
