Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. A wire construction can be recognized under both UL Style 1007 and UL Style 1569 when it meets the requirements of each designation.

Custom Cable Corp. catalog numbers 601 through 605 are identified with both UL Style 1007 and UL Style 1569 approvals, along with CSA TR-64. Having multiple recognized ratings can make the wire suitable for equipment designs that reference different approval requirements, but the applicable temperature and other requirements should still be checked against the equipment specification.

The applicable temperature rating depends on which approval is being used: UL 1007 is rated 80°C, UL 1569 is rated 105°C and CSA TR-64 is rated 90°C.

Multiple markings on the same wire do not create one combined temperature rating. Instead, each designation has its own evaluated requirements. Designers and purchasing teams should determine which standard applies to the equipment or assembly and use the corresponding rating when verifying suitability.

CSA TR-64 provides a Canadian equipment-wire classification in addition to the UL classifications.

A construction carrying UL and CSA approvals can help manufacturers specify wire for equipment intended for North American markets. CSA TR-64 is commonly associated with PVC-insulated equipment wire rated for 300V, but the required certification should always be confirmed against the finished equipment specification rather than assuming one approval replaces another.

VW-1 indicates that the wire has met a specified vertical flame test used to evaluate how flame propagates along an insulated wire.

A VW-1 rating does not mean the wire is fireproof. It indicates performance under a defined laboratory flame-test procedure. This can be important when an equipment specification calls for wire that meets a particular flammability requirement, especially where multiple insulated conductors are routed within an enclosure.

Not automatically. UL 1007 and UL 1569 are equipment-wiring classifications and should not be treated as direct substitutes for building wire solely because the voltage or conductor size is similar.

The required wire type depends on where and how the conductor will be installed, along with the applicable equipment standards and electrical codes. A wire may have the correct AWG size and voltage rating but still have a different intended use or approval. The complete wire specification should be checked before making a substitution.
