FPLP identifies power-limited fire alarm cable that is rated for installation in plenum spaces.
The designation indicates that the cable meets flame and smoke requirements for certain air-handling spaces. The required cable type should always be confirmed against the fire alarm system design, applicable code and local requirements.
Unshielded cable can be appropriate when the circuit does not require additional protection from electromagnetic interference.
It provides a simpler construction for fire alarm and signaling circuits where interference is not expected to affect system performance. Shielded cable may be preferred when electrical noise is a concern or when the equipment manufacturer specifically requires it.
The conductor size should be selected according to circuit length, current requirements, voltage drop and the fire alarm equipment specifications.
Larger conductors have lower electrical resistance and may be needed for longer runs or circuits with greater load requirements. This product family includes 12, 14, 16 and 18 AWG options for different system needs.
Yes, projects in New York City may require fire alarm cable that meets local approval requirements in addition to standard UL classifications.
This product family is identified as New York City Certified Fire Alarm Cable. Designers and installers should still verify the specific project requirements and current local code before selecting cable.
Not necessarily. Different fire alarm circuits can have different conductor-size and pair-count requirements.
Notification appliances, initiating devices and other signaling circuits may have different run lengths, loads and equipment requirements. Cable should be selected for the specific circuit rather than assuming one construction is appropriate throughout the entire system.
