Portable Cord

Portable cord is used to supply power or control connections to equipment that may be moved, flexed, plugged in, repositioned, or used temporarily. Common applications include portable tools, portable appliances, small motors, industrial equipment, utility control applications, signal circuits, construction sites, commercial equipment, transportation, and machinery.

The correct portable cord depends on the voltage rating, conductor count, flexibility, jacket material, temperature rating, and installation environment.

Portable cord is designed for applications where flexibility, movement, temporary use, or equipment connection is important. Power cable is a broader category that may include fixed wiring, distribution cable, motor cable, feeder cable, and other cables used to carry electrical power.

Type SOOW cord is a heavy-duty portable cord commonly used for industrial equipment, portable tools, portable appliances, small motors, construction sites, utility applications, and other demanding environments.

The letters generally indicate a service cord construction with oil-resistant insulation, oil-resistant jacket, and water-resistant performance. It is commonly available in 600V constructions.

SOOW cord is generally a 600V heavy-duty portable cord. SJOOW cord is generally a junior service portable cord with a 300V rating.

Both can be used for flexible equipment connections, but the right choice depends on voltage, equipment load, environmental conditions, flexibility requirements, and project specifications.

To choose the right portable cord, start with the equipment and environment. Confirm the voltage rating, conductor size, number of conductors, amperage/load requirements, jacket type, temperature rating, oil resistance, water resistance, flexibility, and whether the cord will be used indoors, outdoors, temporarily, or with moving equipment.
